Rights cases increase during PA's tenure

Since 1994 till now courts found police guilty in 196 fundamental rights violation cases. The Police Department paid Rs.80,33,875 as compensations to the complainants in these cases.

Forty-five percent of the fundamental rights violation cases during this period, were filed by Tamils, Human rights sources said.

From 1990 to 1993 only 210 fundamental rights cases were filed against the Police. But cases filed by Tamils were few and most of them were arrested under the Prevention Of Terrorism Act (PTA) introduced in 1979.

During that period the Police department paid Rs.39,33,850 as compensation to complainants.

In 1994, 253 fundamental rights cases were filed. In 39 cases police officers were found guilty. They were ordered to pay Rs.11,60,700 as compensation to victims.

In 1995, 144 fundamental rights cases were filed. In 23 cases, police officers were found guilty and were ordered to pay Rs.5,90,550 as compensation to complainants.

In 1996, 199 fundamental rights cases were filed. In 20 cases police officers were found guilty and were ordered to pay Rs.3,57,125

In 1997, 383 fundamental rights cases were filed. In 21 cases, police personnel were found guilty and were ordered to pay Rs.16,18,500 as compensation to victims.

In 1998, 314 fundamental rights cases were filed. In 45 cases police officers were found guilty and were directed to pay Rs.17,36,500 as compensation to victims.

In 1999, 348 fundamental rights cases were filed. In 47 cases police personnel were found guilty and were ordered pay Rs.15,66,500 as compensation to victims.

Most of the fundamental rights cases were filed by Tamils fundamental rightsom Jaffna, Batticaloa and Colombo.
