Kumaratunga declared President[TamilNet, Wednesday, 22 December 1999, 07:57 GMT]Chandrika Banadaranaike Kumaratunga was declared President by Sri Lanka's acting Commissioner of Elections D.M.P.B Dassanayaka this afternoon. The Commissioner made the declaration on the basis of the votes counted so far. The PA's Presidential candidate had got 51.41 percent of the total national vote while the UNP candidate, Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe scored 42.22 percent. Although the results of several electorates are yet to be officially announced, the declaration was made when the votes polled by Ms. Kumaratunga exceeded 51 percent. Sources said that Ms. Kumaratunga would take oaths as President this evening. A press conference was called by her soon after she was declared President by the acting Commissioner of Elections this afternoon.
