Party leaders to discuss Vanni situation
[TamilNet, Monday, 08 December 1997, 23:59 GMT]
Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister for Defence Gen. Anuruddha Ratwatte called all party leaders in Parliament today for a discussion about the situation in the Vanni.
The meeting will be held in the Sri Lanka's Parliamentary complex tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. The discussion is seen as a move to pre-empt the UNP from focusing on the plight of the Vanni people in the adjournment debate it requested the speaker last week. The government is keen to see that it is not portrayed by the opposition as being totally insensitive to the plight of a section Tamils. The UNP has regularly been making attempts to impress the local press and the Tamils in general that it is concerned with the plight of the refugees in the Vanni.
