Welikade Tamil detainees assaulted

Three Tamil political detainees at the Welikade prison were beaten up by the Sinhala prisoners and prison guards on Friday evening. They have been warded at the prison hospital, sources said.

Three women prisoners were injured following a brawl with Sinhala women prisoners. Tamil prisoners were later beaten up by the prison guards when they complained the incident, the sources said.

Mr.S.Vinayakamoorthy, a human rights lawyer in Colombo has informed the details of the incident to the Chairman of the Human Rights Commission, Mr.T.Sundralingam.

Three Tamil detainees were killed and over 40 wounded last month at the Kalutara prison, 30 km. south of Colombo.
