Arrest of two carrying banned goods

Two persons who were transporting banned goods to the Vanni were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) in the seas off Pallimunai in the Mannar district last night.

They were handed over to the Mannar Police for further investigation, said sources. The police said Petrol, Diesel, batteries and tyres were among the goods recovered by the Navy.

Sources said the two were believed to be involved in business, buying goods in the Mannar area and then selling them in areas not controlled by the SLA.The Government has either banned or imposed strict restrictions on the quantity, of several goods to the Vanni region held by the LTTE.

The Police, however, suspect that they were transporting them to the Tigers.
