Lone applicant for Jaffna police

Faced with an increasingly apparent shortage of troops for holding Jaffna, the Sri Lankan government has embarked on an ambitious project to recruit Jaffna girls to its Reserve Police Force.

Prospective applicants were invited today for walk in interviews at the main Police station which is currently located in premises of Hotel Ashok in Jaffna town.

Only one girl appeared for the interview.

Jaffna Police sources said that interviews will be held tomorrow as well.

The government is recruiting more and more women to its security forces as Sinhala youth are quite reluctant to join up as soldiers.

A large number of women Police have been deployed in Colombo as the government is unable to find an adequate number of army, navy or airforce personnel to man all the strategic points in and around the city and to carry out routine security work.

The PA regime is under pressure from the army to bring in more Police personnel to fill the security vacuum which is creeping upon Jaffna as the Sri Lankan military high command imperceptibly thins out troop positions in the peninsula to beef the Jayasikurui Operation which appears to be bogged down in the monsoon ravaged Vanni jungles.

But Sinhala Policemen are dodging postings in Jaffna. Hence the move to recruit Tamil girls to the Police in Jaffna said well informed Police sources.
