ICRC monitoring hunger strike POWs

Delegates from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) are monitoring the health situation of the 15 POWs in the custody of the Liberation Tigers who have begun a hunger strike, Harsha Gunawardene, the spokesman for the organisation in Colombo, said today.

Mr. Gunawardene said the ICRC delegates are closely watching the situation and that it has been decided to visit them daily until such time that there is a change in the situation.

The 15 POWs began a hunger strike on 10 February, urging the Sri Lankan Government to secure their release, the Liberation Tigers said.

Mr. Harsha Gunawardene declined to comment on the health condition of the POWs.
