Heavy fighting erupts in Elephant Pass

Fighting has erupted between the Liberation Tigers and Sri Lanka Army soldiers in the Elephant Pass region, in the north of the island, from the early hours of the morning today, army sources said.

A statement issued this afternoon by the Ministry of Defence said 15 Sri Lanka Army soldiers were killed and 18 others were wounded in the fighting.

SLA sources said the troops have repulsed the attack.They said troops had recovered 14 bodies of the Tigers and some weapons.

SLA sources said the Tigers launched a two-pronged attack on the southern defence lines of the base, destroying 8 defence positions.

The Liberation Tigers are yet to comment on todays fighting.
