Three Sri Lanka Army (SLA) commandos were killed and 7 others were wounded in clashes in Uduthurai in the Vadamaradchi East on Wednesday, 8 March. One member of the Liberation Tigers was also killed in the fighting, the Voice of Tigers Radio (VoT) said this morning.
The fighting erupted when an SLA commando unit moved to attack LTTE positions in Uduthurai. Tigers recovered also weapons from the dead commandos the radio added. The radio identified the dead LTTE member as Nilavarasan (Paul Rajadurai Robin of Jaffna). Elsewhere in Jaffna the Sri Lanka Army has ordered civilians living in Karanthai, a hamlet in Pallai, about 8 km. north of Iyakkachchi, to vacate the area. Sources in Jaffna said the troops may be planning to expand their positions in Pallai. About 100 families living in Karanthai have, however, declinded to move from their farming lands. In a separate incident, the Liberation Tigers fired mortars towards police posts in 'Sector 11' on the Vavuniya-Mannar road. Police sources said no damages were caused by the shelling. The police retaliated by firing mortars towards suspected LTTE positions, the sources said.
