A soldier was killed and another wounded when the Liberation Tigers attacked a sentry post near the Kinnaiyadi Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp around 9 p.m. last night, Police sources in Batticaloa said.
The wounded soldier was rushed to the Valaichenai hospital and later airlifted to Colombo, the sources said. Another soldier was injured by the blade of the helicopter that had been called in for evacuating the wounded trooper from the army camp at Kalkudah, 3 k.m east of Valaichenai by the coast. The soldier was helping his colleague on to the helicopter when he was slashed by the rotor blade. He was also sent to Colombo for treatment. Kinnaiyadi is a village by the lagoon near Valaichenai town 30 km. north of Batticaloa. The Liberation Tigers control the hinterland beyond the lagoon.
