The Batticaloa post office has stopped mail sorting in the night as a consequence of daily interference in their work by personnel from the local military intelligence unit and Tamil informants operating with it.
Letters are being delivered quite late as result of this said a postal worker in Batticaloa. Postmen complain that they are being blamed by people in the town for missing bank drafts, foreign currency and cheques in letters that have been cut open by the military intelligence unit which is present in the Batticaloa post office when mail sorting work is done during the night. The postmen have to refused engage in night mail sorting also because they are often roughed up by the military intelligence and its Tamil informants, said an official.
