Generator blasted in Akkaraippattu
[TamilNet, Sunday, 21 December 1997, 23:59 GMT]
The powerful central generator of the Akkaraippattu telephone exchange was destroyed by a bomb which went off in the early hours of the morning today around 1.30 a.m.
Akkaraipattu is an economically booming Muslim town on the south eastern coast of the island in the district of Ampara. It is about sixty five kilometers south of Batticaloa. The telephone exchange was extensively destroyed eight months ago when another bomb ripped through the telecommunications building. The exchange was reopened two months ago. The Sri Lankan Police blame the Liberation Tigers who are active in the large Kanjikudichcha Aaru jungles about fifteen kilometers further south of Akkaraippattu for the two explosions. The LTTE runs a large logistical base in the Kanjikudichcha Aaru region.
