Artillery exchange in Jaffna

The Sri Lanka Army and the Liberation Tigers fought heavy artillery duels Friday in Meesalai sector of the Thenmaradchi Division in the Jaffna peninsula said sources. Meesalai is about 3 km. from Chavakachcheri on the Jaffna highway towards SLA-held Kodikamam. Chavakachcheri was captured by the Tigers in May this year.

Sources in SLA controlled parts of Jaffna said that heavy shelling which began around 9 p.m. Thursday continued today. They said the army was firing heavy weapons in the direction of the areas held by the Liberation Tigers in the peninsula.

A civilian, Iyaththurai Apputhurai, 40 from Kachchai near Chavakachcheri was wounded in the heavy shelling, other sources said.
