The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has decided on two people to take over the leadership of the party, which fell vacant with the sudden demise of Mr.M.H.M.Ashraff, founder leader in a helicopter crash on Saturday. Deputy Leader Rauff Hakeem and Mrs Feriel Ashraff, widow of the late Mr.M.H.M.Ashraff will take over the joint leadership of the SLMC.
The Supreme Council of the SLMC took this decision after long discussion Sunday night. The politburo of the SLMC met Sunday, but failed to reach a consensus on electing a new leader and it recommended to the Supreme Council that the party needed a joint leadership at this critical juncture. The Supreme Council of the SLMC then met and accepted the recommendation made by the politburo. Meanwhile, Mrs Feriel Ashraff,48, will contest the Digamadulla electoral district during the forthcoming general election in place of her late husband, a senior SLMC member said.
