A young girl, identified as Kandhaiah Amudha of Vidaththalthivu in Mannar, who was allegedly raped by a Sri Lankan Police intelligence operative in vavuniya town yesterday retracted her statement to the Police this afternoon.
The girl is from a family living in a minor settlement on the town's outskirts. The girl was walking along with her elder sister by a lodge in vavuniya town yesterday when both had been accosted by a CID officer who had wanted to take them to a room in the lodge for 'investigations'. The elder sister escaped from the man while being taken to the lodge and complained to the local PLOTE office that her sister was in danger. The lodge was surrounded by PLOTE cadres immediately and the man was apprehended and handed over to the Police. The girl who had been forced into the lodge told the Police that she had been molested by the CID officer. Mr.S. Shanmuganathan MP of the PLOTE sent a note to the Police chief in Vavuniya protesting against the incident. However, PLOTE sources said that the girl had informed the Police today that she was not molested by the CID officer. Sources said that the girl might have been intimidated to retract her statement.
