Jaffna Bishop criticizes Tamil Groups
[TamilNet, Saturday, 27 December 1997, 23:59 GMT]
The Jaffna Bishop Rt. Rev. Thomas Savundranayagam told TELO leaders who called on him this morning in connection with the forthcoming elections that it would have been a good thing if the Tamil parties had boycotted the local government elections.
He told M.K Sivajilingam and K. Mahendiran that the people of Jaffna have suffered a lot and expected something positive from the Tamil groups but now these groups have added to their problems he told them. Meanwhile the PLOTE went on the campaign trail to Chunnakam, Mallakam and kantharodai today meeting people where safety permitted them. The EPRLF is preparing large hoardings to put up in various parts of Jaffna as part of their propaganda thrust. The PLOTE and the EPDP placed advertisements in the Uthayan daily yesterday for the first time since the campaign began. As the Uthayan is the only daily published in Jaffna now, revenues for the paper from election advertisements will be massive, said sources in the Tamil groups today.
