Mayor condemns pornography distribution in Jaffna

The Jaffna Municipal Mayor claims that some powerful elements, with vested interests, are trying to pollute the minds of younger generation in the peninsula by flooding the area with obscene literature and films. Mr.N.Raviraj made this warning when S.Mangalanesan, a Councillor, brought to the notice of the council meeting held Tuesday that some security personnel were seen distributing handbills and films of an obscene nature to youths.
Mr.Mangalanesan earlier on Monday referred to this problem at the Health Committee meeting of the Jaffna Municipal Council. At the monthly meeting of the Jaffna Municipal Council when this matter was brought to the notice of the councilors, Mayor Raviraj said that the distribution of obscene literature and films would certainly corrupt the minds of younger generation in the peninsula. "We know that a plot has been hatched to undermine the cultural pattern of the Jaffna people. We would conduct an investigation to identify the interested parties behind this plot aimed at disrupting the social fabric of the society," said Mr.Raviraj. He further said that the council would organise seminars in the municipal area in March to educate the youths not to become victims of this plot. Representatives of community centres, rural development societies and other welfare organisations would be invited for these seminars, he added. A sub-committee has been appointed to conduct a counter propaganda to wipe out this menace, with Mr.Selliah Vijeyaretnam elected Chairman of the sub-committee.
