The commander of the 52-1 brigade in Chavakachcheri, Brigadier. A.S Senivaratna met representatives of all the groups which are contesting the local government elections this morning at 10.30 a.m. for a discussion on security arrangements for the polls due on January 29. The meeting was at the Subash Hotel in Jaffna town.
He told the groups that they should not fight among themselves. The brigadier told them he will have to act as a law and order officer if they did not observe peace among themselves. The groups were told that they should obtain permission twenty four hours before holding a meeting and that they should show all their election posters to the army before pasting them. He said that he could not let them carry extra weapons but in the event of one of their leaders having to travel about in the peninsula, special passes to carry more weapons could be issued.
