Jaffna election duty seen unappealing

Sources at the Batticaloa Kachcheri election office said that only eight government servants have volunteered thus far to do election duty in Jaffna for the local polls there on January 29.

The eight persons are from the Ottamavadi Divisional Secretariat. Ottamavadi is a predominantly Muslim area, about 32 kilometers north of Batticaloa.

There were six Muslim and two Tamil volunteers for election in Jaffna.

Sri Lanka's Elections Commission is hard pressed for adequate government servants to run the local polls in Jaffna as almost all Tamil officials in the peninsula have declined to engage in election duty.
