Red Cross driver arrested

Sri Lanka Army soldiers arrested a driver of the Sri Lanka Red Cross, Vavuniya branch, for transporting banned items to the Vanni region controlled by the Liberation Tigers, security sources in the northern town said Tuesday.

Army sources said 2 mobile phones, 142 batteries and 98 CDs concealed in the Red Cross vehicle were found by troops manning the check point at 'Ramya house' on the Vavuniya-Kandy road. The Red Cross vehicle was transporting posts to the Vanni region.

The driver was later handed over to the police for further interrogation, the sources said.
