New dates for no-confidence motion debate

The Sri Lankan Government Wednesday said that the opposition's no confidence motion against it would be debated in the parliament for four days from 7 August. "The government's decision was announced at the party leaders' meeting held this morning" Mr.Richard Pathirana, Leader of the House told Parliament.

The main opposition, United National Party (UNP) has earlier demanded that the motion should be debated during the third week of July. Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka said last month, at a ceremony in Colombo that the motion would be debated on July 16, 17 and 18.

"It is very difficult to accommodate the UNP's request as the national census is scheduled to be held on July 17 and the parliament will not be in session on July 17 and 18" Mr.Pathirana informed the House.

"The United National Party is yet to announce its stand on government's decision ", parliamentary sources said.
