Election booths to be clustered

The elections commissioner's office in Jaffna said that there will be 404 polling booths in the Jaffna peninsula for the local government polls. The largest number of polling booths will be in the Waligamam east Pradeshiya Sabha (41) and the Waligamam north Pradeshiya Sabha (40).

The Waligamam north area , with the exception of Mallakam and part of Thellipalai, largely comes under the greater Palaly-KKS military base complex. Hence, the great majority of the polling booths in this council area will have to be clustered say officials.

The same can be said of the Waligamam east Pradeshiya Sabha. Most of this council's 41 polling booths will have to be clustered.

If the government cannot find at least the minimum security required for each booth, the clustering will have to be in army camps sources said.

An officer said that the booths would be distributed as follows:

Jaffna municipal council - 41

Chavakachcheri urban council - 11

Kayts Pradheshiya Sabha - 23

Delft Pradeshiya Sabha - 03

Velanai Pradeshiya Sabha - 24

Waligamam west Pradeshiya Sabha - 26

Waligamam north Pradeshiya Sabha - 40

Waligamam south west Pradeshiya Sabha - 31

Waligamam south Pradeshiya Sabha - 29

Waligamam east Pradeshiya Sabha - 41

Karaveddi Pradeshiya Sabha - 33
