High security zones declared in Colombo

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge Saturday proclaimed some parts of the Colombo City as high security zones. "This proclamation has been made under Section 27 of the Prevention of Terrorism Act No.48 of 1979" a presidential secretariat release said.

"Wellawatte bridge, Hospital Road, Saranankara Street, High Level Road, Kirulapone Road ,Alvitigala Place, D.S.Senanayake Street ,Gnanatheepa Mawatte, Maradana Technical College junction, First Cross Street, Central Road,N.H.M.Abdul Cader Road,Coastal area from Colombo Harbor to Wellawatte Bridge" said the proclamation.

"Heavy vehicles will not be permitted within the high security zones. The Inspector General of Police has been appointed as the authorized officer to oversee the security and traffic arrangements of the newly proclaimed high zones" an official of the Ministry of Defense said.
