JVP ultimatum to Kumaratunga

Sri Lanka’s Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Saturday evening issued an ultimatum to President Chandrika Kumaratunge to decide on their proposal for a 'probationary government' to resolve the present political crisis. "The delegation of the JVP told President Chandrika at a discussion held Saturday evening that they should arrive at a decision regarding the formation of a probationary government on or before August 31 Friday", party spokesman said.

The JVP leaders during their two rounds of talks with President earlier suggested the formation of a 'probationary government in a bid to resolve the present political crisis and to ensure country's political and economic stability.

JVP delegation led by its General Secretary Mr.Tilvin Silva reiterated its earlier proposals at Saturday's discussion with the President. The delegation comprised Mr.Wimal Weerawanse, Propaganda Secretary and Parliamentarian Mr.Nandana Gunatilaka. Associated with the President was Prime Minister Mr.Ratnasiri Wickremanayake. The talks lasted for about three hours, JVP said in a press release.

The government side told JVP leaders that parliament would be reconvened as announced earlier on September 7. However the President did not indicate that parliament would not be prorogued second time, JVP sources said.
