EU monitors visit Vavuniya

Police Election Secretariat Thursday said that it has received 1090 complaints related to election violence since the nominations were filed on 27 October. 62 complaints were received during the twenty-four hours that ended at 6 a.m. Thursday the police said. Meanwhile the European Union Observers' Mission visited the northern town of Vavuniya Thursday and discussed measures to ensure fair and smooth polling with the Returning Officer, S.Ganesh.
The EU team met election and security officials and discussed the ground situation in Vavuniya, officials said. The EU Observers Mission is scheduled to visit all districts in the northeast province, said sources. According to the police, the main opposition United National Party has lodged 553 complaints and 367 by ruling People's Alliance since the filing of nominations. The JVP lodged 37 and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress 34 complaints.
