Curfew following political violence

The Muslim dominated Balangoda town in the south of the country has been placed under police curfew from 8.30 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday following violent clashes between supporters of the ruling People's Alliance and main opposition United National Party Sunday early morning. A UNP activist was killed and two others were injured in the clashes, police said.

In another incident that took place Sunday morning at Anuradhapura in the north central province, an activist of ruling PA was shot dead and three others were wounded, the police said. The wounded were admitted to the Anuradhapura hospital, medical sources said.

In the meantime, the total number of complaints related to election violence in the country has risen to 1250 since the nominations were filed on 27 October. The Police received forty-one complaints during the last twenty fours hours that ended Sunday morning at 6 a.m., Police Election Secretariat said.
