The Trincomalee District Fishermen Co-operative Societies Federation ( TDFCSF )Tuesday decided to join the protest campaign by the Jaffna fishermen if the United National Front government failed to remove all restrictions and the ban on fishing in sea. The Federation in its news release said "It is high time for the new government to show their goodwill by allowing Jaffna fishermen to do fishing freely in sea".
The resolution passed at the general meeting of the TDFCSF states: "It is high time for the new United National Front government to show their goodwill to the people of the Jaffna peninsula by removing all restrictions and ban on fishing . Jaffna fishermen's expectation was that the new government would ease their untold hardships by lifting all restrictions and ban on fishing. Now they feel that the present government too follows the past government's instructions. "Jaffna fishermen's protest campaign is justifiable. Their demands should be met without any delay. The UNF government should act promptly to indicate its genuine interest in peace by helping the fisherfolk in the northeast province to engage themselves in their trade without any hindrance. "Fishermen in the eastern part of the country too are badly affected due to the present restriction and ban on fishing. Hence the Trincomalee District Fishermen Co-operative Socieities Federation too decides to join the protest campaign of Jaffna fishermen if the UNF government failed to resolve the life and death struggle of north-east fishermen by removing the ban on fishing".
