Fisherman badly wounded

A Muslim fisherman was severely wounded by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) firing early this morning at Miravodai, near Ottamavadi, 25 km north of Batticaloa, said sources in Valaichenai. The youth, identified as M. Mustapha, was out fishing in the Valaichenai lagoon when he was shot through his testicles by the army.

Soldiers at a sentry by the lagoon, according to SLA sources, had detected movements by the LTTE and had fired towards Pirambaditheevu which is across the lagoon from Miravodai.

Mustapha was removed to Valaichenai hospital and later transferred to the Batticaloa Hospital.

This incident follows another in Valaichenai yesterday, when a young Tamil fisherman S. Sivarajah was injured in SLA firing.
