Bank workers protest privatisation

Employees of Sri Lanka's largest banks Thursday launched a major campain against measures stipulated by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to privatise the island's financial giants.

Sri Lanka Police put up barricades Thursday in the heart of downtown Colombo to block the Ceylon Bank Employees Union from handing over a petition to Finance Minister K.N Choksy at the ministry's office on Lotus Road.

Informed sources said that this was the first instance of the Police barricading roads, impeding public traffic, since the United National Front came to power.
