Gazette notification on 19th amendment postponed

The United National Front government Tuesday decided to postpone the gazette notification on the nineteenth constitutional amendment until Friday to give time for President Chandrika Kumaratunge to submit her response, Prime Minister office sources said.

The decision was taken after a meeting between the President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge and the Prime Minister Mr.Ranil Wickremasinghe, held at the Presidential Secretariat, Tuesday morning.

President Kumaratunge and Prime Minister Wickremasinghe agreed to meet on Friday to arrive at a final decision on the issue, sources said.

The Tuesday’s discussion centred on the nineteenth constitutional amendment, de-proscription of the LTTE and Thailand peace talks, said a press release issued by the Presidential Secretariat.

Former Foreign Minister Mr.Lakshman Kadirgamar associated with President Chandrika Kumaratunge in the talks.

Soon after the meeting with the President, Prime Minister Mr.Ranil Wickremasinghe held urgent talks with his senior ministers at Temple Trees. The UNF top leaders expected a resolution agreeable to both parties could be found soon before Friday on the nineteenth constitutional amendment.
