Kachcheri to be counting centre
[TamilNet, Friday, 23 January 1998, 23:59 GMT]
All senior officers of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS) in the peninsula were told by the Commissioner of Elections today to report at the Jaffna Kachcheri on January 27th, two days before the local government elections in the Peninsula, said Kachcheri sources in Jaffna.
Once the polling is over, the Kachcheri will function as the counting centre on the evening of January 29. The Commissioner of Elections has also ordered that the Kachcheri has to be handed over to the Chief Returning Officer on January 25. Tamil officers in Jaffna expressed strong reservations about working as part of the election staff for the polls, fearing the volatile situation in the peninsula now. In the wake of this, the Sri Lankan Government flew election staff from Colombo to do the preparatory work for the polls earlier this month.
