Multi-community sportsmeet in Kalutara

Seven hundred sportsmen and women and officials from the North travelled to Kalutara to participate in a sportsmeet for peace being held in Matara starting from today. The participants departed from Vavuniya yesterday by a special train, sources said. Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremasinghe, will be the chief guest at the prize giving ceremony on the last day of the meet, sources said.
Liberation Tigers (LTTE) head of political section of Vavuniya district Elilan, Vavuniya district deputy Treasurer Mrs. Charles, Chief Treasurer S. Sathiyaseeln, Vavuniya district Parliamentarians Selvam Adaikalanathan and K. Rajakuganeswaran and other officials joined the participants from Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya and Mannar districts at the Vavuniya Urban Council to give the participants a warm send off. The sportsmeet which lasts for four days from 16 to 19 November, is being held at the Kalutura Public Stadium. More than 2000 sportsmen, women and officials from the NorthEast district are said to be participating in the meet. The sports event is organized as a special event by the Government of Sri Lanka to promote understanding between the different communities and to enkindle enthusiasm among the communities towards the peace process, sources said.
