Confusion over LTTE ban mechanism

Confusion continues as to the exact legal means by which the government proscribed the Liberation Tigers. The Attorney General's Department, the secretary of defence and the ministry of justice denied any knowledge of the procedure adopted in banning the LTTE.

The government printer said that he has not printed any extraordinary gazette notification promulgating the proscription under emergency regulations.

However, sources at the Presidential secretariat said that the LTTE was proscribed under the normal law of the country.

But well infromed legal sources countered this arguing that to proscribe the LTTE under the normal law of the country an act has to be passed in Parliament which, accrding to them, has not been done.

Sri Lankan state media, The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Coorperation announced yesterday the Sri Lankan government has banned the LTTE.
