The All Ceylon Hindu Congress (ACHC) issued a statement today condemning the incidents in Kandy last Sunday in which Hindu temples had been damaged.
The statement said "It is with immense pain of mind that we have come to know that 24 divine statues if Kandy Sri Selva Vinayagar Kovil have been damaged by hooligans on Sunday January 25, and the divine chariot of Kurunduvatte Sri Muthumariamman Kovil was also burnt on the same day". "We strongly condemn these incidents and call upon the government to take necessary action to pay sufficient compensations to the management of these temples for restoration work." The statement also referred to the destruction and damages to a number of temples and other religious and places of worships during the military action in the north and east. It went on to say "We might add that most of these still remain unrepaired, and not restored to their original condition. Infact devotees are not allowed to go to some Kovils" The statement was signed by the ACHC president Mr. V. Kailasapillai and the General Secretary Mr. Kandiah Neelakandan.
