SLMC secretary resigns

Mr. Basheer Segu Dawood, who was appointed as the new general secretary of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) yesterday night, resigned his post today, saying that he did so in the interests of the party, sources said.

Party sources said that Mr. Rauff Hakeem, the leader of the SLMC, has accepted the resignation of Mr. Dawood, who is a national list Member of Parliament (MP) from the SLMC and the deputy minister of Housing. A replacement will be chosen at a meeting of the party leadership tonight, the sources said.

Mr. Dawood was appointed last night as the SLMC expelled a dissident group led by Mr. A.L.M. Athaulla, including the previous general secretary, Dr. M. Hafrath.
