JDMA condemns attack on journalist

The Jaffna District Media Association (JDMA) Wednesday condemned the police attack on its President Mr.V.Thavachelvam at Nelliady as a blatant violation of press freedom." Even after showing the press accreditation card Mr.Thavachelvam was attacked by the Police," said JDMA in a statement issued today.

Mr.Thavachelvam sustained injuries Tuesday afternoon when he was covering the picketing campaign for an international news agency.

The Police attacked Mr.Thavachelvam after he had shown his press accreditation card, media sources said.

The JDMA has asked the government to initiate an impartial inquiry into the assault.
