Batticaloa, Ampara inundated again

Continuous rain the last few days in Batticaloa and Ampara districts have flooded several areas, forcing the Water Resources Authorities to open the discharge outlets of Unnichchai and Urugamam irrigation tanks in the Batticaloa district to reduce the dangerous water levels. The discharge has submerged the village of Sithandy under water, sources in Batticaloa said.

Residents in Sithandy, village situated 21 km north of Batticaloa town, have sought temporary shelter in village schools and the temple. Three schools in Sithandy, including Vantharumoolai Madhya Maha Vidyalam did not funtion, sources said.

Since rains show no signs of subsiding, residents in the affected eastern towns expect more flood water and increased hardships in the next few days.

Lagoon traffic also have been severely affected. Rising waters have impacted Manmunaithurai and Ampilanthurai and people are taking increasing risks in crossing the lagoon.

Thampattai, Thambiluvil and Thirukovil villages in Ampara district also have been heavily affected by flood waters, sources in Ampara said.
