Jaffna committee on resettlement to commence work

The twenty one-member Jaffna district committee appointed to look into the
question of resettling displaced in areas outside high security zones is to
commence its work Thursday. This decision was taken at a conference held at
the Jaffna district secretariat Wednesday, sources said.
SIHRN Director Mr.Irenus Selvin presided at the commencement of the
conference, and Dr.A.S.Gunasingham presided later. At the meeting of the SIHRN held last week in Kilinochchi it was decided
to appoint district level committees in the North-East province to take
steps to resettle displaced in their villages. It was agreed to appoint a
twenty one-member committee for the Jaffna district committee, sources said Accordingly, the LTTE, the government and the UNHCR were each to nominate
seven members to the committee. The nominees recommended by the LTTE are:
S.Cyril, P.Kanagalingam, S.Ponnambalam, S.Paramanathan, K.Arunthavapalan,
A.Neelakandan,
and Fr.P.Jeyasekaram. The government nominees are: S.Sivanandan, W.J.S.Perera, M.A.Jayasekara,
Dr.A.S.Gunasingham, Dr.V.Ambalavanar, S.A.C.Mubin and S.Subair. The UNHCR is yet to appoint its members to the district committee. The
Divisional Secretary for Velanai division, Mr.K.Ratnam, will function as the
secretary of the district committee, sources said.
