New SLA camp in Varani

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has built a new camp in a housing scheme in Varani, Jaffna, local residents said. They said that the playground of the village has also been taken over by the SLA for the new camp. At least ten families in the housing scheme have been moved out by the military from the area demarcated for the camp, the residents claimed.

Neither the village fold nor local officials were given notice of the construction, sources said.

The housing scheme was built for local residents under the Gramodhaya Program (village awakening) in the mid eighties.

The SLA built a new camp in the Chavakachcheri sector last week, after evicting resettled families from the site.
