Bar Association demands new Law Faculty at Trinco campus[TamilNet, Wednesday, 12 February 2003, 02:33 GMT]The Trincomalee District Bar Association,(TDBA), a branch of the Sri Lanka Bar Association, requested the Higher Education Ministry to establish a Law Faculty in the Trincomalee campus of the East University, enabling students of the northeast province to study for Bachelor of Law degree in their region. A resolution to this effect was unanimously adopted at the annual general meeting of the Trincomalee District Bar Association held Sunday, legal sources said. Tabling the motion a senior lawyer Mr.O.L.M.Ismail said it is high time for the Higher Education Ministry to establish a Law Faculty in the Trincomalee campus of the East University as the development of a region also depends on functioning of a full-fledged university
The new President of the TDBA Mr.R.Thirukumaranathan speaking in support of the motion said Trincomalee is the administrative capital of the northeast province. The Ministry of Justice has launched a project of constructing a modern court complex to the international standard in Trincomalee. Hence it is appropriate to start a Law Faculty in the Trincomalee campus of the East University. More students from the province would benefit from this project, he said. Mr.Ramalingam Thirkumaranathan was elected as the new President of the TDBA for the period 2003-2004. Mr.Arumugam Jegasothy was elected General Secretary and Mr.A.M.Zahir was elected Treasurer. Mr.A.W.A.Sattar and Mr.N. Varathan were elected vice president and assistant secretary respectively. Messrs O.L.M.Ismail, M.K.Sellarajah and M.K.M.Sally were elected to the executive Committee and Mr.K.Sivapalan was elected as the delegate to the parent body.
