Development Board formed in Vavuniya to further education

An Education Development Board to work towards improving the general standard of education in Vauniya district, to establish means of providing educational assistance to poor children and to raise the level of technical education, has been formed in Vavuniya, sources said.
The Development Board was formally announced in a meeting held in Kurumankadu Development Union building in Vavuniya, Sunday, presided by Grama Sevaka Official V. Muthurajah. Important Officers in education and civil society members associated with educational activities in Vavuniya participated in the event. Professor of Commerce at the Vavuniya campus of Jaffna University, R. Nanthakumar was selected to head the Development board. K. Sivanathan was appointed as Secretary, S. Vaithiyanathan, was appointed as Treasurer, K. Perambalam as Deputy President and T. Tharmalingam was appointed as Assistant Secretary, sources said. Vavuniya Government Agent will act as the Guidance Counselor. In addition, a thirteen member advisory committee that includes the four District Secretaries has also been formed. The Educational Development Board will also work towards upgrading the Vavuniya Campus to full University status and to prevent political interference in educational development activities in Vavuniya. Additional Government Agent of Vavuniya, S. Ragunathapillai, Vavuniya district secretary, Sivalingam Satiyaseelan, Professors from Vavuniya Technical College, Commerce and Science Department of Vavuniya Campus, and School principals spoke on the urgent activities to be undertaken by the Education Development Board.
