An intensive 40 day course, organized by the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) in partnership with UNICEF, on building the management capacity of Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working throughout the Northeastern Province, commenced earlier this week at Puthukuddyrippu, sources in Vanni said.
UNICEF identified the need for NGOs implementing reconstruction, rehabilitation and resettlement programs to have appropriate management skills to meet the challenges in managing donor funds and came forward with funding support for the workshop. There is expectation that the June Conference in Tokyo will result in donor funds being pledged towards the reconstruction of the Northeastern economy devastated by the twenty year old war. The course, focusing mainly on project management, was developed by Tamil management professionals from Australia and is being delivered in Tamil by a select group professionals who arrived in Puthukuddyrippu last week. This is the first time that a course of this quality and magnitude is being held in the Vanni. UNICEF’s Project Representative Penny Brune and TRO officials welcomed the trainees and the trainers. Both partners expressed confidence that the course would result in a significant increase in the capacity to manage projects in the Northeast.
