Sri Lankan president Chandrika Kumaratunge met the leader of the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) Mr. C Thondaman, the powerful plantation trade union this morning, in a fresh bid to resolve the massive strike that has brought the country's large plantation sector to a stand still.
The president proposed a wage scheme 95 Rs. (USD 1.53) as daily wage, with a price bonus of 6 Rs (USD 0.10). The President’s offer is one rupee more than what the plantation companies were prepared to offer earlier. The CWC leader Mr. C Thondaman told the President that he would have to discuss the matter with other trade unions. The strike of more than 600,000 workers is into its 4th day.
