The Jaffna University Students Union Monday decided to hold an upsurge movement in the peninsula, demanding the United National Front (UNF) government to fully implement the ceasefire agreement that the UNF signed with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), sources said.
The meeting of the union was held at the university premises Monday, chaired by its President, Mr. S.Paheerathan. A resolution to this effect was unanimously passed.
The resolution states, "As the government has not fully implemented the ceasefire agreement enabling the internally displaced to return to their own homes by removing the high security zones, we unanimously resolve to organize a mass agitation campaign demanding the government to remove all
high security zones in the district, enabling hundreds of thousand of internally displaced Tamil people now languishing in refugee camps and welfare centres without fixed abode for more than a decade to return to
their own homes. We further resolve that the government should implement the ceasefire agreement in full." A majority of the students of the union was of opinion that the proposed agitation should be held during the first week of June. However, no decision was taken regarding the date for the agitation to be held, sources said.
