NIAP officials survey work in Vannerikulam, Aanaivilunthan

Nimal Fernando, the Country resident representative of the World Bank which is funding the North East Irrigation and Agriculture Project (NIAP), the Chief Engineer, Kilichochi district Government Agent (GA) Mr. T. Rasanayakam visited Vannerikulam and Aanaivilunthan kulam to survey the rehabilitation work of the irrigation tanks Saturday, said sources in Kilinochchi.
Karaichi region Assistant Government Agent, Commissioner of the NIAP scheme, Deputy Commissioner of Irrigation, Chief Irrigation Engineer, Commissioner of Agriculture, Engineers attached to Road Development Authority and social worker attached to the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) also accompanied the World Bank officials on the survey tour, according to sources.
Mr. Fernando ceremoniously opened a Public multi-purpose Hall built under NIAP plan in Vannerikulam at the start of the teams visit to Kilinochchi.
The NIAP team also discussed with residents of Illaku village who had attended the opening ceremony.
The team then proceeded to Aanaivilunthan area to appraise the rehabilitation work to the irrigation tanks being carried out under NIAP funding.
When the residents pointed out that additional work needed to be done to obtain the full benefits of the irrigation project, Mr. Fernando requested Irrigation Officials to submit a cost proposal to his office. He further indicated that authorization to proceed with suggested improvement work can be obtained without difficulty.
The team also visited the homes of two families who were given assistance under the social self-employment help scheme.
Sources associated with NIAP said that under the 2003 program for renovating irrigation tanks in NorthEast, 101 villages have been selected in districts of Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee and Batticaloa where implementation activities began in March.
NIAP signed agreements with non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) FORUT, Seva Lanka, Village Development Organization and Sareeram which are implementing the projects for NIAP.
