Two Indian fishermen, Palaniandy Karunanithi and Andiappan Nadukattan, were
rescued by Sri Lankan fishermen in the deep seas off Trincomalee
Saturday. They were sent to Mirihana detention centre to be sent back to
India on the orders of the Trincomalee Magistrate and additional District
Judge Mr.S.Thiagendran, legal sources said.
Sri Lankan fishermen who were engaged in fishing deep sea fishing off
Trincomalee coast saw the two Indian fishermen in unconscious state in a
boat, which was drifting in midsea due to engine trouble. They rescued the
Indian men and handed them to a naval craft of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) that was passing the
area at that time, sources said. SLN handed the Indians to Trincomalee Harbour Police who in
turn produced them in Trincomalee magistrate's court Monday to be sent to
Mirihana detention centre, legal sources said. The Magistrate instructed his registrar to
inform the Indian High Commissioner in Colombo about the plight of two
Indian fishermen, legal sources said.
