Volunteers teachers made permanent assume duties in NE[TamilNet, Thursday, 19 June 2003, 18:46 GMT]Ninety percent of the nine hundred and nine Tamil medium volunteers made permanent Thursday assumed duties in their respective Tamil medium schools in the northeast, provincial education ministry officials said. The central government public service commission approved a list of 909 Tamil medium volunteer teachers for permanency out of a list of 1200 submitted to it by the northeast provincial education ministry after holding interviews and on the spot inspection to select qualified volunteer teachers for permanency. However the Public Service Commission in Colombo only approved 909 for permanency, sources said. Of the 909 Tamil medium volunteer teachers 786 are Tamils and 123 Muslims. The breakdown of the Tamil medium volunteer teachers who have been made permanent follows:
