Undergrads call for closure of Offices, Businesses on Pongu Thamil day

P. Paheerathan, president of the Jaffna University Students Union, said Wednesday that the students have called for closure of all businesses and government offices on Friday during the Pongu Thamil celebrations.
"In this important time in the history of Tamil People, widespread participation of Tamil people across Jaffna district in the Pongu Thamil event that will present a unified voice reflecting the aspirations of the Tamil people is critical," the student leader said. Invitations to attend the Pongu Thamil celebrations have been sent to diplomats, foreign dignatories and key Government of Sri Lanka officials, according to student sources. University undergraduates and students of Technical College are conducting house-to-house campaigning explaining the purpose of the event and soliciting, Paheerathan said. Jaffna Traders Union has requested its members for active participation in the Pongu Thamil event. Several public organizations also have asked their members to join the event and make it a success.
