Trinco wins provincial sports championship

Trincomalee district Friday emerged as overall champions of the northeast province in the Eighth Schools Athletic Meet for the year 2003 for the third consecutive year with 248 points. The Jaffna district came second with 234 points and Amparai district third with 141 points, Assistant Director of Education

The four-day Inter District Provincial Athletic Meet concluded Friday evening with an prize giving ceremony where prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners by the chief guest Mr. K.Mahalingam, Deputy Chief Secretary (Finance) of the NEPC. Northeast Provincial Director of Education Mt.S.Mahalingam presided. The meet was held at Trincomalee McHeyzer Stadium from July 1st to July 4th. About three thousand students from twenty-four education zones in the eight districts of the northeast province participated in the provincial athletic meet, Mr.T.Arunagirirajah said

Mr.Arunagirirajah said this year for the first time in the northeast provincial sports history, judges of national and international repute were brought down to Trincomalee from Colombo to give national importance to the provincial competition. Mr.Arunagirirajah further said that Mr.N. Vairavanathan who officiated at the Sydney Olympics as one of the starters had come to Trincomalee and officiated as one of the judges of the NE Provincial Athletic Meet thus giving weight to the standard of the competition.

The chief guest Mr. K.Mahalingam said sports and cultural activities give room to all communities to get together and share their views irrespective of their racial and language differences. In the four-day athletic meet held in Trincomalee students from Point Pedro to Ampara participated irrespective of their language, cultural differences thus proving that sports could play a vital role in promoting national harmony, said Mr.K. Mahalingam.
