As a result of the Sri Lanka Army’s actions prior to the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement, only fifty-eight schools out of the eighty-nine in the Vavuniya North Education Zone are operating from their original locations, said a deputy education director for the zone, Mr. S. Pathmanathan, on Friday.
The schools that could not operate from their original locations are operating as joint-schools in other locations, using the resources and buildings of other schools, Mr. Pathmanathan said. During the SLA’s Operation Jayasikiru, forty-one schools in the Neduntheevu division and forty schools in the Omanthai division were damaged, and some of the schools were completely destroyed. Mr. Pathmanathan said that many of the affected schools have not been reconstructed and these schools are still operating as joint schools with other schools.
